Ledger Live is the main door to your Ledger hardware wallet. It turns a small metal or plastic device into a full cryptocurrency bank that fits in your pocket. This guide explains the login process, daily use, and safety tips in plain words. Everything here works for Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax, and Flex models.
Most crypto apps keep your private keys inside the phone or computer. Ledger Live never does that. Your keys live inside a special secure chip that never leaves the hardware wallet. The login is not a password you type. It is a physical action: you plug in or connect the device and enter a PIN on its own screen. This stops hackers even if your computer is infected.
Go to ledger.com and click the big blue button that says Download Ledger Live. Pick the right file for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, or Android. The file size is around 120 MB. Install it like any normal program. When you open it for the first time, a welcome screen appears with three choices: set up new device, restore from recovery phrase, or import desktop accounts.
Unbox your Ledger and find the USB cable. Connect it to your computer. Ledger Live recognizes the device in seconds. Choose “Set up as new device”. The screen on the Ledger asks you to create a PIN. Use 6 or 8 digits that you can remember but others cannot guess. Next comes the 24-word recovery phrase. Write every word exactly on the paper card provided. Check each word twice. Store the card in a fireproof safe or hidden spot. Finish by confirming a few random words on the device screen. Your wallet is now ready.
Open Ledger Live on your computer or phone. Plug in the Ledger with USB or wake it with the button for Bluetooth. The app says “Unlock your device”. Type your PIN directly on the Ledger buttons, never on the keyboard. The device shows “Application is ready”. Press both buttons together. That is your login. The dashboard loads with your total balance and list of coins.
Click Manager on the left side. Allow the app to connect when the Ledger asks. Scroll through the list of more than 50 apps like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Cardano, or Ripple. Click Install on the ones you need. Each app is tiny, around 50 KB. When finished, go to Accounts and add an account for each installed app. Ledger Live scans the blockchain and shows your balance in less than one minute.
Open the account you want to receive into. Click Receive. Choose the same account again and continue. A large address and QR code appear. Look at your Ledger screen. It shows the same address. If both match, everything is safe. Copy the address or show the QR code to the sender. Always start with a small test transaction of one or two dollars.
Click Send. Pick the account to send from. Paste the recipient address. Type the amount. Choose the network fee: slow, standard, or fast. Ledger Live calculates the total. Click Continue. Now check your Ledger screen carefully. It shows the address, amount, and fee. Scroll with the buttons to read everything. Only press both buttons if every detail is correct. The transaction goes out in seconds.
The Portfolio page shows everything in one place. You see the value in USD, EUR, or any currency you pick. A colorful circle graph displays how much you have in Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, and others. Tap the eye icon to hide the amounts when someone is nearby.
A yellow banner appears when a firmware update is ready. Never ignore it. Click Update firmware and keep the device connected the whole time. The process takes three to five minutes. After that, open Manager and update individual coin apps. New security fixes arrive every few months.
The mobile app looks almost the same as desktop. Turn on Bluetooth on both phone and Ledger. Open the app and tap Connect. Choose your device from the list. Enter PIN on the Ledger. You can now send, receive, and check prices anywhere. Mobile works great for quick checks at coffee shops or airports.
If the app says “No device found”, try another USB port or cable. Restart Bluetooth on your phone. On Android, turn on location services. On Mac, allow Ledger Live in privacy settings. Never type your PIN on the computer keyboard. If the device freezes, hold the button for ten seconds to restart.

Never enter your 24 words anywhere except on the device itself during recovery. Turn on passphrase if you want a hidden wallet. Change your PIN every year. Keep two backup recovery cards in different cities.
